Daunte Wright death: Police Officer

A Minneapolis police officer who purportedly mistook her gun for a Taser when she fatally shot Daunte Wright has resigned, along with a local police chief.

Kim Potter shot the 20-year-old black man during a routine traffic stop on Sunday in the Brooklyn Center area of the city, sparking two days of clashes between police and protesters.

Police chief Tim Gannon is also quitting, Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliot said on Tuesday.

Mr Gannon claimed the 26-year veteran officer accidentally drew her weapon and she did not mean to use deadly force, but the killing has been ruled a homicide by a medical examiner.

“I’ll Tase you. I’ll Tase you. Taser. Taser. Taser,” the officer is heard shouting on her bodycam footage released on Monday.Advertisement

She draws her weapon after the man breaks free from police outside his car and gets back behind the wheel.

The same female voice could be heard saying, “Holy s*** I just shot him,” as the car pulled away, police said.
