Netflix has confirmed the production of a Peaky Blinders movie, with the Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy reprising his role. “Tommy Shelby wasn’t done with me yet,” Murphy stated, expressing his excitement about returning to the character.
Netflix unveiled the news by sharing an image of a hefty script titled “A Peaky Blinders Film”. The film is a continuation of the BBC series created by Steven Knight, which aired six seasons from 2013 to 2022. Tom Harper, the director of the first season, will be at the helm of this project.
Murphy expressed his satisfaction about reuniting with Knight and Harper for the film, stating, “This one’s for the fans.” In addition to starring in the film, Murphy will also serve as a co-producer.
Knight expressed his genuine excitement about the film, promising an “explosive chapter” in the Peaky Blinders saga. He declared, “No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
The original series traced the rise of the infamous Shelby family in the unruly streets of Birmingham after World War I. Knight confirmed that filming is scheduled to commence in Birmingham in September, with the narrative propelling the family into World War II.
Murphy’s portrayal of Shelby bolstered his fame, following roles in films such as The Dark Knight Batman series, Inception, and 28 Days Later. His performance in the 2023 film Oppenheimer further cemented his status, earning him an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild award for his portrayal of physicist J Robert Oppenheimer in Sir Christopher Nolan’s biopic.
